Can you outfit your weapon in the military?
I am going to be doing Presidential Security in the Marine Corps, and I am inquiring as to whether I would be allowed to make changes to my weapon I’m issued.
I UNDERSTAND that PS doesn’t require anything extra, but after my 3 year term I figured I would try my hand at something a little more infantry related.
I am specifically looking to hear whether I can or cannot:
Add a supressor/silencer.
Add a scope (ACOG or whatever)
Add the grenade tube on the barrel of the gun…
YOU KNOW, THE CALL OF DUTY SHIT. Obviously however, I am going to be using this in a practical manner.
I want an M1A1 like "Hoot’s" in Black Hawk Down, with a suppressor.
Can it be done? Thanks in advance
No I am not YET in the Marines, I ship out in October.
And I tested and cleared all qualifications for PS.
Out of bootcamp or not, it will be a YEAR and a HALF before I get to either Camp David or the other option, the comm. center.
Clearly you are not in the Marines, because you would know that the answer is NO. You cannot put your own things on your weapon.
And secondly, who the hell told you that you were doing PS? Highly unlikely for a boot to have that job.

I would say no. All weapons are authorized and issued for use by the US gov’t and have never heard of a military person having the authority to add personal items to a gov’t weapon.. Even the general has a pistol of gov’t issue..

If you want to spend the money yourself about the only thing you can buy to modify your weapon is an optic of some sort provided your chain of command will allow it and it does not physically alter your weapon. I know lots of guys who have bought their own ACOGs or EOTECHs but most Infantry units issue those things anyways.

I agree with the first answer, you’re definitely no jarhead. The "add the grenade tube on the barrel of the gun" is what gave you away. They are either M203s or the newer M320s. Actually, a real devildog would’ve called them by their nickname…
In short, your rifle will have the rails loaded according to the perceived utility of the weapon. Only the goodies that are mission-vital. These things are procured via chain-of-command.
P.S. You definitely won’t have an M1A1. More likely an M4.

Only bolt-on stuff, really. (You’re going to be issued an M4A1 or an M16A4)
If you need a suppressor, you’ll have one issued to you, so forget about it. You can’t use your own anyways.
An optic is usually issued as well, but you can still buy your own if you want. For example, they issue you an Aimpoint M68, but you want an ACOG, you can go right ahead and get that ACOG, as long as you’re shelling out for it.
M203 launchers are issued as well when required. You won’t be the judge of when you need a grenade launcher.
The main thing you’ll be concerned about is your sling, optic, and magazine choice. Getting your own sling set up is fine as long as you don’t need to dissasemble your weapon to install the mounting points.
I already covered optics. It’s up to you what you want to look through.
As for magazines, you can use your own…So if you want to use some Magpul PMAGs instead of the shitty USGI aluminum mags, that’s fine. Just keep in mind that the Marines won’t replace any of this stuff.
God bless, stay safe.

What makes you think you’ll be doing Presidential Security? You’re certainly not going to get it guaranteed in your contract and since you’re still in High School, you really have no clue.
What happened to your dream of being a Louis Vuitton sales associate?

Dude – I did 15 years of my military career at the White House. Exactly where is none of your business but I have pictures to prove it. Marines do not do "Presidential Security". They stand around the entrances to the White House and look pretty. You do NOT get to be in the Marine guards right out of boot camp. You will be a Marine for awhile before you get chosen for that assignment. You will not carry an M1A1 or an M16 or anything else dangerous.
In other words, you’re full of shit.
